Kinda like a Care-Bear-Stare

by Joy Monger

I’ve been compared to that guy, Ricky Fitts, in the movie “American Beauty” on more than one occasion. You know the one who films the trash bag floating on a breeze because he thinks it’s so beautiful? And every time I hear it I think it’s about the best compliment I could receive.

I take pictures of my food a lot. Just because it makes me happy. I called my mom to celebrate when the guy who made my coffee spent a little extra time making sure I had just enough foam in my drink. I think being in a music store when it’s rainy outside is just about as close to heaven as you can get. And rocks are pretty.

But lately the world has felt overwhelming sad, there are so many people with troubles, and dictators with agendas, and pollution and sickness and corruption, more and more I use the word “need” when I mean “want”,  I’ve stopped noticing how pretty rocks are.

And then I read this quote:

‘Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.’  -Mother Theresa

So for the next year I am going to look for something small that brings me joy every single day. And I am going to document it. And hope that by looking for joy, more joy will find me.  And I will share that joy with others. And that joy will spread…
